The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England and the Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center, funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Presents a credited, comprehensive Multicultural Counseling Competency Series Developed by Mid-Atlantic and New England Addiction Technology Transfer Centers

Increasing Multicultural Awareness

This course will provide counselors, with a focus on substance abuse/addictions counselors, an opportunity to examine some of their own assumptions, explore personal cultural history, and racial/cultural identity development in an attempt to increase counselor awareness. This is the first step toward cross-cultural counseling competency.

Knowledge, Concepts, and Competencies

This course, one of four in our Multicultural Competency Series, offers foundational Knowledge in Cultural Competency, introducing major concepts about culture, race, and ethnicity within the context of counseling in general, and substance abuse counseling in particular.

You will become familiar with the cultural differences between the major racial/ethnic minorities in the United States. Through self-disclosure (online discussion group; email), individual experiences, and project presentations students will gain a better knowledge of themselves, these groups, and multiculturalism.
